Can Tiger Woods overcome the worst year of his career physically and mentally?

PGA player and former world number one golfer Tiger Woods has had the kind of year that he would like to forget each and every morning that he wakes up. But he can’t, and now he must learn to move on.

The nightmare for Tiger Woods began on Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving last year, when he crashed his car just outside his home in Windemere, FL.

The crash came only two days after the National Enquire had posted a story saying that the celebrated PGA star was having an affair.

As Tiger recovered from his injuries in a local hospital near Orlando, more and more reports surfaced about the affair. The women, identified as Rachel Uchitel, originally denied the affair and hired high-priced attorney Gloria Allred to represent her.

Within days, more stories started leaking about other women  that Tiger had been seeing outside of his marriage, and the media frenzy was on.

In the ensuing days and weeks, the public was shocked by the many allegations of adultery committed by Tiger, and the troubled golf sensation finally entered a rehab in mid-January for what was termed at the time a “sexual compulsion.”

Tiger left the rehab on Feb. 11, and issued his first public comments about his alleged transgressions in a press conference aired nationally on Feb. 19, admitting to his affairs adultery.

“I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in.”

“[My wife] Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As Elin pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words; it will come from my behavior over time,” Tiger said at the time.

“I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was unacceptable and I am the only person to blame.”

His wife Elin did not attend the press conference, and the two were unable to work things out, finally agreeing to a divorce which became final in late August, with Tiger forking over an estimated $100 million.

Meanwhile, Tiger’s golf game was at issue as well. Finally returning to the course in early April for the Masters, a major tournament that Tiger has won four times, firing a 68 in the first round and fueling speculation that Tiger’s personal troubles had not affected his game.

However, that notion was quickly debunked, as the five month layoff from golf took its toll and Tiger and he quickly imploded, taking himself out of contention.

In the ensuing months, Tiger entered several tournaments, including the three remaining majors, but was unsuccessful in even  getting a sniff of the leaderboard. Tiger also fired his swing coach Hank Haney, and in August hired teaching professional Sean Foley, and set about the task of re-building his swing for at the least the third time in his career.

Now, after playing in the Chevron World Challenge last week and contending for the championship before losing to Graeme McDowell in a playoff, Tiger sees hope for next year, and a chance to rebuld the relationship with his fans.

The year 2010 can’t end soon enough for Tiger Woods.
